Hadley's Take On Michael Jackson

She said this to me in the car on the way home from her summer camp today:

"Daddy, why all the time on the news their talking about "Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson Michael Jackson?"  They're messing up his rest.  They're disturbing his peace.  Why can't we just listen to his music and remember his music, like when he was a cute little boy and he was a star.  Because I think it makes Michael Jackson sad with everybody talking and messing up his peace."

RIP Number 9

Top 10 Steve McNair moments:

Some ones that could have been included are the Giants comeback, and the New England ice ball where, even the the Titans lost, McNair made it interesting.  And the Steelers game where McNair came off the bench in the 4th quarter, injured, to win the game.  That was the game where I finally really started to appreciate McNair.

Man, this just sucks.

New Music Review: The Decembrists - The Hazards Of Love; Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown

In the past few weeks I have bought alot of 2009 albums, wanting to check out some new stuff.  I have a few albums I really like, and I'm going to be doing a review here every once in a while about some of the albums I have checked out.

The first is The Decembrists - The Hazards of Love.  Simply put, this album is a masterpiece.  Now, as is often the case with a masterpiece, it's not something you would just casually put on and enjoy anytime.  Just like you wouldn't throw on a DVD of Schindler's List out of the blue and sit down and enjoy it, so, too, with this album.  In fact, Schindler's List is a good example of a materpiece film you might watch just once and decide you were good for the rest of your life.  The Hazard's of Love isn't quite like that, but calling it the Schinderl's List of albums is not too far off.

The album is 17 tracks long.  Through the first 6 or so tracks, i was absolutely blown away.  Speechless.  The album is much in the vein of Pink Floyd - The Wall in that it tells a complete story.  A few of the middle tracks drag a bit, but it picks back up, and fizzles maybe a bit at the end.  Maybe it's more appropriate to say you are simply worn out by the end of this album.

I highly recommend checking out this album.  Again, like a fine whine or a braised lamb shank, this isn't something to be enjoyed all the time.  But in my opinion it is really an extraordinary album, and is worth checking out.  I give it 4 1/2 out of 5 *s.

The second album I am reviewing here is Green Day's new album 21st Century Breakdown.  I am not a big Green Day fan, but I have appreciated them much more ever since I saw them live in concert.  They put on a spectacular show, and are professionals through and through.  Anyway, while this new album isn't great by any stretch, it is a very solid album and one that is very listenable and accessible.

It, too, is one that tells a story, but that is where the similrities between it and The Hazards of Love end.  Typical Green Day punk/rock sound, and out of 17 tracks there are maybe only a couple that I would say are not real strong.  I have listened to this one several times since I got it, and would recommend.

Vandy Baseball Likes To Live On The Edge

Well, after another impropbable run, Vandy baseball is once again a game away from a championship.  This time, it's the regional championship, and the right to advance to a Super-Regional.

A week ago they made a hell of a run through the SEC tourney, only to choke in the championship game against LSU.  Actually, I attribute that more to LSU, who after they lost early to Vandy played with a vengeance.

It would be really cool to see this group of talented but young ball players extend their season.

GO DORES!

Journey's New Lead Singer Is Asian??

This blew my mind.

Ever since I discovered this, I can't stop singing Journey songs with a stereotypical Asian accent.

I know it's wrong but I can't help myself because it is so damn funny.

Well, Well Well . . .

This is the first ranking of any kind in like forever of SEC schools in pre-season that had Vandy anywhere but last or second to last.  Vandy is the 9th best team coming out of spring practice according to this dude.

Things Vanderbilt has going for them:  QB depth - we have two legit SEC QBs, a third who has shown flashes (Funk), and a true freshman Parade All-American (Goro); almost every starter returning, on both offense and defense; an o-line who played all last year together - going into last season, none of those guys had ever started together, and they really jelled throughout the season; a top secondary; and continuity in the coaching staff.

Things working against us: WR depth - we have plenty of talent here, but very little experience - need someone to step up huge here; light in the ass on the defensive line, as usual; alot of unknowns at RB; a murderous schedule, which, in addition to the regular SEC minefield, includes Georgia Tech; and continuity in the coaching staff.

My prediction is we are right around .500 once again.  I will go with 6-6, and another bowl game for Vandy.  Having LSU and Georgia Tech on the schedule prevents a step forward.

Rush Limbaugh Has Lost It

So we all know Rush is a bit crazy anyway, but I always considered him one of the more listenable conservative radio guys just because he is a pretty politically savvy guy and has interesting perspective.  I figure if I can listen to Rush and still be convinced I am right, then my "liberal" ideology is that much stronger.  And no one is better than Rush than we he gets away from his schtick and analyzes politics in a neutral manner.

Anyway, I am probably one of the few people I know that listen to Rush on a daily basis, so I doubt anyone caught this.  On my way home to grab some lunch today, I heard him say that "some people consider Obama himself to be the follow-up to 9/11, the second wave of the terrorist attack."

Wait, what?

Oh sure, Rush distanced himself from this, just saying there are some people "out there" who believe this.  But he didn't really debunk it, either.

I mean, this is so crazy and irresponsible.  Funny how big a deal it is to conservatives that we "respect the office of the presidency" until a democrat is in there.  I mean, they went after Clinton's kid, and Obama has been called a millitant angry black man.  Now Obama is the culmination of the terrorist's plans to take over America, apparently.

Maybe Rush would be better off hooked on pain killers.

Media-Manufactured "Uproar" Over Miss California

Has anyone considered the possibility that Miss California lost, not because of her views on gay marriage, but because her answer was stupid and nonsensical?  I mean, did anyone actually listen to her rambling, incoherent answer, or did they just put their fingers in their ears and say "Lalalalalala" until she got to the part about marriage being between a man and a woman?  It seriously reminded me of the answer that Miss Teen South Carolina gave that made the rounds of the innerwebs a year or so ago.  It wasn't quite that stupid, because nothing could be, but it was close.  Don't take my word for it, here is the transcript:

Perez Hilton: “Vermont recently became the 4th state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit. Why or why not?”

Prejean: “Well,  I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you very much.”

Huh?  "Opposite marriage?"  "My country?"  You mean this country, the one you are trying to represent?  And it looks like she contradicts herself more than once.  Should people be able to choose, or should it be limited to a man and a woman?  I know you have to set the bar low for these ladies, but c'mon, you have to do better than this.

And while I would agree that this question was a little too "gotcha" for a stupid beauty pageant, still the representative of freaking California should have been prepared for this one.  I mean that state has been ground zero for the gay marriage debate.

Good on her for giving an honest answer, and if being honest is what lost her the crown, I would agree that is troubling.  But I am pretty sure being stupid is what lost her the crown.  Sorry.

If You Are Hijacking A Plane Or Robbing A Bank And You Have Hostages . . .

. . . why would you ever let them go?  At least without getting some assurance that you will get what you want (money, safe passage out, etc.)?  I mean, once you let those hostages go, you are a total goner.  What the hell do the local police/S.W.A.T/para-military have to worry about once the innocent civilians are let go?

Hostage takers are stupid.
